Read the reviewsBagpipes - a great Lumière
This is one of my favourite ever lumières. I started by wishing that the colours were richer and the image sharper, more contrasty. The humanity of it blew all that away. As so often with great lumières, it succeeds in spite of (because of?) the mundanity of its subject and photography. Three things about it that I love: the silence of the bagpipes; the way we get to spy on people’s reactions (the men all look at him, the women all ignore him); the lads, obviously, and the tension of their passing, checking him out, and returning.
